- 5.0 out of 5 stars from James -- Beautifully written, timely and honest : Guelzo’s measured approach to Robert E. Lee could hardly be better timed. But he spares neither research nor scholarship to examine the Lee you may not have met before. Guelzo does not paint a hateful portrait of Lee, but he does not draw a flattering one either. Rather, we find a man conflicted less by deeply ideological concerns and more by personal ones which lead to his decision to join the Confederacy. This action is ultimately what Guelzo correctly calls treason. That this factual statement is cause for controversy in 2021 provides a singular explanation for the necessity of this book to readers today. Highly recommend.
